This is the after party for the screening of WILD COMBINATION A Portrait of Arthur Russell by MATT WOLF
The screening is at the ROXIE Theater part of the 2008 FRAMELINE FESTVAL
Synopsis:
WILD COMBINATION is director Matt Wolf’s visually absorbing portrait of the seminal avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Arthur prolifically created music that spanned both pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Now, over fifteen years since his passing, Arthur's work is finally finding its audience.
Wolf incorporates rare archival footage and commentary from Arthur's family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—to tell this poignant and important story
ANNOUNCEMENT! STEFAN GOLDMANN IS THE NEXT HNY GUEST!
Having released for top notch labels like Classic and Ovum since 2001, Stefan Goldmann is one of Germany’s most respected producers and DJs today – especially after his ground breaking releases for Innervisions and Perlon. Creating an unique style of house beyond deep and future forward techno beyond minimal, Stefan has clearly set an unmistakeable trademark of his own on the map of electronic music today. With his meticulous production and focus on quality he’s been running ahead of the pack, and being enthusiastically rinsed by top notch DJs from all accross the board. His track Sleepy Hollow on Innervisions – also featuring a b-side together with Germany’s most wanted: Ame - attracted key players as diverse as Carl Craig, Garnier, Villalobos, Hawtin, Steve Bug, Luciano and Gilles Peterson playing it in their sets and making it a hit all over the place. It was also voted being one of the top 10 tracks of 2006 by the readers of Germany's Groove and De:Bug magazines. Sleepy Hollow clearly set the standard in 2006 together with the other few anthems like Audion’s “Mouth To Mouth” and Carl Craig’s remix for Theo Parrish “Falling Up”.
A string of highly acclaimed remixes (Romboy & Chelonis R. Jones, Blackjoy, IT, Kenny Hawkes, Sideshow and coming up: DJ Gregory) for labels like Faya Combo, Freerange, Classic, MFF and Systematic also established Stefan as one of Europe’s most in demand remixers. Some of his rather experimental works have been recently added to the IMEB Phonoteque at the National Library of France and exclusively featured by Richie Hawtin in his DE9 Transitions DVD mix on Minus as well as being an integral part of his digital live sets.
Furthermore in 2006 a now legendary series of 6 DJ sets by Stefan was commisioned and broadcasted by London’s Lektric Forms Radio. Other artists on the station included Ivan Smagghe and Jennifer Cardini. In his radio sets, Stefan mixed anything from John Zorn to LFO. His club sets are equally challenging, representing a broad range of outstanding dance music instead of sticking to a narrow conception of one of today’s subgenres. Main spot frenzy is as much a strength of Stefan as his early morning sets at Berlin’s Panorama Bar.
In 2007 Stefan finally founded his own label Macro, with its debut “Aurora”. Macro was created as a boutique label showcasing very few artistically outstanding, carefully designed releases a year. The first release went straight to #4 on Groove Mag’s Top50 and received overwhelming support by everyone from Hawtin to Luciano and Lazarus, to Kruder and Steve Bug. Besides running the label and producing new material for Innervisions and Perlon, Stefan is DJing all over Europe, with upcoming tours of the US and Japan.

Alexader Robotnick is one of those charachters in music that mystifies. Alexander Robotnick (aka Maurizio Dami) is an Italian electronic musician. He made his debut on the Italian music scene as the founding member of Avida, a dance-cabaret band featuring Daniele Trambusti and Stefano Fuochi.
In 1983 he attained international popularity with his track "Problèmes d'amour", published first by the Italian label Materiali Sonori and then by Sire-Wea. "Problèmes d'amour" went on to become a "cult track" of dance music. In 1984 he joined "Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici" a multimedia-oriented group and composed soundtracks for theatre works, videos and video-installations. He also composed soundtracks for films and theatre works by Italian directors such as Alessandro Benvenuti, Antonio Climati, Marco Mattolini, and Marco Risi.
In 1987 he turned his interest to World Music, and for the next decade collaborated with African, Kurdish and Indian musicians. In 1994 Robotnick began working with the Indian-Italian band "Govinda" leading to the production of two tracks "Devotion" and "Transcendental Ecstasy" for Govinda's first album "Selling India By the Pound".
In Summer 1995 he conceived and organized the first Ambient Music Festival in Florence at Anfiteatro delle Cascine. In 1996, with Nazar Abdulla and Rashmi Bhatt, he created "The Third Planet" , a multi-ethnic band that blended traditional music from Kurdistan, Algeria and India with modern sounds. With "The Third Planet" he produced 2 albums; "Kurdistani" and "The Third Planet". The band gave numerous concerts in Italy. In 1997 his collaboration with Lapo Lombardi and Ranieri Cerelli lead to the "Alkemya" project, releasing an album with CNI. In 2000 he created a label of his own, Hot Elephant Music.
A selection of music supported at last year’s Burning Man Festival by Uchronia, Hot Alien Lounge, the Deep End, Green Gorilla Lounge, Honey Sound System and Wicked. Greek Gods 01
Bacchus, in Greek and Roman mythology, the god of wine, identified with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, and Liber, the Roman god of wine. The son of Zeus (Jupiter), Bacchus is usually characterized in two ways. One is that of the god of vegetation, specifically of the fruit of the trees, who is often represented on Attic vases with a drinking horn and vine branches. As he came to be the popular national Greek god of wine and cheer, wine miracles were reputedly performed at certain of his festivals. The second characterization of the god, that of a deity whose mysteries inspired ecstatic, orgiastic worship, is exemplified by the Maenads, or Bacchantes. This group of female devotees left their homes to to roam the wilderness in ecstatic devotion to the god. They wore fawn skins and were believed to possess occult powers. The name Bacchus came into use in ancient Greece during the 5th century bc . It refers to the loud cries with which he was worshiped at the Bacchanalia, frenetic celebrations in his honor. These events, which supposedly originated in spring nature festivals, became occasions for licentiousness and intoxication, at which the celebrants danced, drank, and generally debauched themselves. The Bacchanalia became more and more extreme and were prohibited by the Roman Senate in 186 bc . In the first century ad , however, the Dionysiac mysteries were still popular, as evidenced by representations of them found on Greek sarcophagi.
Mezzanine booked Hercules and Love Affair + Timo Maas on the same bill. Then they called us to repair some of the damage. We couldn't be more excited.
Not only do we get the honor of introducing ourselves to one of our favorite new acts but we also get to reward our devoted dancers. We are offering 100 free tickets to the event this Friday at Mezzanine (11/04/2008), first come first serve.
Hercules and Love Affair is responsible for this winters #1 faggy dancefloor favorite "Blind" featuring Antony's (of Antony and the Johnsons fame) vocal stylings. His album is chock full of disco-house deliciousness and flawless from start to finish. 12" and a full length coming out on DFA records, Hercules (aka Andy Butler) is the gay making us shake our hips and lick our lips. We are delighted to give him a warm San Francisco welcome, as we know you are too.
Send an email to: CONTEST@mezzaninesf.com with “FREE HERCULES” in the subject and your FIRST and LAST NAME in the body of the email. Follow these instructions very carefully otherwise you might not get on the list. Please only send one name at a time.
After all the spots have been filled, we will have a LIMITED $10 discounted tickets guestlist.
As apart of our first ever adaptation of a book onto the dance floor starting today we will be sharing different excerpts from Dancer from the Dance on our blog and myspace until Sunday the 23rd. Here is pages 30-32 featured on our flyer:
