Queer Reads | Bob Colacello??s Out (6/12/08) [View | Hide]
As the editor of Andy Warhol's Interview from 1971 to 1983, Bob Colacello was perfectly placed to record this life of art openings, movie premieres, cocktail parties, dinner parties, charity balls and after-hours clubs; he wrote about the best of them in a monthly column called "Out." In 1975, Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann gave Colacello one of the first miniature 35mm cameras, a black plastic Minox small enough to hide in his jacket pocket, and Colacello began snapping photographs too. Sneaking a shot of Henry Kissinger holding forth at a dinner party, or Bianca Jagger letting loose at Studio 54, Colacello was in the middle of the action, "an accidental photographer" more akin to a secret agent than any typical paparazzo.
With their skewed angles, multi-layered compositions, and moody lighting, his images have an immediacy and grit not often found in the work of professional party photographers. And what subjects! Diana Vreeland, Calvin Klein, Jack Nicholson, Richard Gere, Cher, Raquel Welch, Mick Jagger, Diane von Furstenberg, Barry Diller, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Nan Kempner, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and always Warhol himself. ??Out?? documents an era at once so close and so far away: the wild, glamorous, disco-and-drugs decade between the end of the Vietnam war and the advent of AIDS, when, in certain parts of Manhattan, every night was party night.
Stud du Jour // Dashing Donny (6/12/08) [View | Hide]
It's hard to get an impression of Donny. When he arrived, he was with two buddies and they brought several cases of beer, and proceeded to slam a beer down via some chugging technique by sucking the whole can down in one fell swoop. His friends were nice enough, but its not normally how I start a shoot off. He said he was nervous and his friends came along for the road trip. He was tipsy for sure. Basically I sent him home to get some sleep, and we started the shoot the next day a bit fresher.
What a difference a night makes! Instead of the quasi-tipsy party boy, I had a super serious and polite dude, who clearly thought about his friends and takes care of his own. So on one hand I know I've got a guy who likes to party, but also can be a real professional guy. And you can see the results in the photos.

Heloise & The Savoir Faire (6/11/08) [View | Hide]
Helosise And Dancer Joe Shepard Talk About The Pageantry of Their Live Shoes, Their Collaboration With Debbie Harry And Their Naughty Gay Nicknames.
With a live show described by Disorder Magazine as a ??great big flying disco ball swerving through a relentless shower of pink glitter and synth-lasers,?? Heloise & The Savoir Faire have already gained popularity in the UK after making their TV debut on ??The Graham Norton Show.?? This mesmerizing New York electro-rock outfit has released their debut album Trash, Rats and Microphones on Elijah Wood??s Simian Records, a new label and joint venture with Yep Roc Records.
An electrified collision of late-70??s disco-infused dance punk and 80??s synth-pop, the group is fronted by the charismatic Heloise Williams and backed by two dancers (Joe Shepard and Sara Sweet Rabidoux) and full band (James Bellizia on guitar, Luke Hughett on drums and Jason Diamond on bass). Trash, Rats and Microphones captures the energy, sexuality and humor of the band??s live show. Of their recent gigs at South by Southwest, Out magazine raved: ???their wild live performances?made us feel like we'd stumbled into the world's coolest, queerest underground club. We're ready to crown the band our pick for breakout stars.??
The album also features guest vocals by Debbie Harry of Blondie fame who recently called Heloise & The Savoir Faire one of her favorite underground bands in The New York Times Style Magazine. When asked about her collaboration with Harry, Heloise says, ??I still can??t believe it happened. She came to a show in New York, and that??s when we were introduced. When I went into the studio, I asked if she would be a guest vocalist. She was amazing and really sex-kittened up the songs!??
Question: How did Heloise & the Savoir Faire come about? Heloise Williams: This band came about because of a quest for fun and entertainment.
Q: What kind of fun? HW: Of the song and dance variety. We like to create a spectacle. We try to create a whole sensory experience, not just one for your ears. Also, a lot of the songs have a strong narrative component. It??s not like we??re acting them out, but we try to give the songs an element of drama.

Prince Harry is quickly becoming the hunkiest royal from the House of Windsor. Case in point, the younger Prince of Wales looking absolutely debonaire in his tux for a recent night on the town for a London gala. Talk about being studlicious! Yum!

I got a message from an adorable guy named Clark Conner about wanting to model for Randy Blue. I took a look at his photos and immediately knew I wanted him for the site. He had this quality that I couldn't quite explain. He was very handsome yet had a sort of rugged quality, especially with that gorgeous chest hair of his. When he came in to meet me he was very calm and introspective.
As we were talking I couldn't shake the fact that I feel I had seen him somewhere before. I confessed this fact to him and he smiled and said that he had actually done some professional modeling work. I knew I had seen that face somewhere before. So I was really glad to have the chance to shoot him for the site.

Interview With Dresden Doll Brian Viglione (6/9/08) [View | Hide]
The Dresden Dolls' Brian Viglione Talks About The Intense Relationship He Shares With Musical Soulmate Amanda Palmer, The Rush Of Dressing In Drag And The Band's Message To Its Gay Fans
A band that blurs the lines between spectator and sport, hunter and prey, the real and the imagined, Boston's The Dresden Dolls are an all-encompassing machine, which is somewhat of a feat considering the band is only two people strong. Vocalist/keyboardist Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione create a world entirely of their own, full of dress-up, independence, confused sexual orientations, loneliness, camaraderie and a bursting, considerable amount of heart all pounded effortlessly into the piano and the drums.
Having spent nearly two years solid on the road since the release of their second album Yes,Virginia, including tours with Panic! at the Disco, the True Colors tour with Cyndi Lauper and The Gossip, and their own sold-out headlining shows across the country, The Dresden Dolls are proud to release their newest collection of songs, the mischievously titled No, Virginia. The album is made up of new songs, old demos and b-sides from the Yes, Virginia sessions. A startling companion album to an old fan favorite, No, Virginia is ripe with the incredible songwriting by which the Dolls are defined, and presents some of their best playing yet: Palmer's piano may literally be turning to dust from the strength she uses to bang on it, while Viglione's drums carry every melody on their sturdy snare snaps and chaotic cymbal crashes.
The Dresden Dolls will be playing select shows in support of No, Virginia later this year. In the meantime, Palmer will be playing a special solo show in her hometown of Boston with The Boston Pops in early June. Additionally, Viglione recently contributed his rhythmic talents to two songs on the recently released Nine Inch Nails album, Ghosts I-IV.
Question: How did you and Amanda first get together?
Brian Viglione: We met at a Halloween party. She was playing music on her spinet piano. I thought, "This is what I've been looking for." I was playing bass in a band, and I wanted to get back to playing drums. Her music offered everything I wanted to experience.
