You'd need a lot of start-up capital (money) to open your own gallery. You will have to find a good location where people will actually see the gallery and come in, you'll have to rent, utilities, other operating costs, you'll need to promote the gallery so people will know it's there. You will have to work there full-time (plus weekends) or pay employees to work there. You'll also need to keep accounting records, etc. In order to cover any of these costs, you will need to find customers who are willing to spend the money to actually purchase your art to the extent that it will cover all your debts and give you a profit. If you've never run any kind of business before, then it's really a bad idea.

Why not start with seeing if you can find restaurants to hang your art for sale? They'll probably want a commission (don't give them more than 40% of the sale!) and they'll get free art while it's hanging, but the upside is that restaurants get a lot more customers (and exposure for your art) than a gallery would. You can also check with galleries in your area to see if any would be willing to show your work...but typically, galleries prefer to show established artists. Art galleries are like any other high-end business, as they service their generally wealthy customers. And while there are some people who buy art because they love it, most gallery customers buy art because they love it AND they expect the value of the art they buy to increase in the long term...it's an investment for them, not just a passion or interior decorating.

This is why I call myself ArtistLike instead of an actual artist. My work isn't a commodity, and professional artists who make a living with their work have been able to convince people that their work is an investment. This has to do with talent, lots of self-promotion and other people buying into the idea that their art is going to be worth more in the future than it is now.

Hey man. A buddy of mine opened up his gallery just last week. The key for him was renting a storefront place. He set up the back end & basement as his living area [added an elevated loft space for his bedroom]. That way - only 1 rent payment, 1 utility bill, etc. He has a cheap little 'chime' on the door so if someone comes in, he can hear them enter. I kicked it off w/ a solo show & sold 5 pieces on opening nite! He doesn't have a lot of money in this at all. He's actually pretty po! For him, it was a commitment to a lifestyle. Another tip: if you're willing to change up the display w/ other artists' work each month, you can garner support from the arts community & bring their investors along for the ride...
