If the Land of Misfit Toys elected a team of cultural ambassadors, DList FEATURED ARTIST LOGAN LYNN would be its poet laureate. In Portland's pulsating music scene, he occupies a singular position- an emo prophet with a penchant for electronic beats, preaching the Good Word to drug-damaged crybabies.
In 2000, he released his debut album, Glee, a blissful, sex-drenched romp through some emotionally treacherous territory. Produced by Pfog, heavy themes of religion, sexuality and identity played out alongside upbeat grooves and smiley-face rhythms. One critic said it "put the 'disco' back in discomfort." That blend of spleen-venting lyrics and "Let's dance!" optimism owes a lot to Logan's unique, mildly scary upbringing.
Homeschooled in a fundamentalist Christian household, he was completely isolated from popular music. (Let's just say the tagline "I Want My MTV" had especial resonance for this 80s baby.) Escape came in the form of the mid-90s underground rave scene, deejaying for tweaked-out teenagers in the Midwest, and later moving to the West Coast to pursue a degree in art school. All this helps to account for the leitmotifs threaded through much of his music: sex, drugs and Jesus.
His self-titled sophomore effort came out in 2006, using his earlier work as a springboard for exploring fresh sonic territory. The album release coincided with a much-praised performance at San Francisco's all-leather Folsom Street Fair.
A recent collaboration with Producer Carlos Cortes of Portland DJ collective Assemble The Empire has yielded an E.P. entitled "Feed Me To The Wolves", which was released in the fall of 2007. Logan was recently signed to The Dandy Warhols' record label, "BEAT THE WORLD" RECORDS, and will be releasing his much anticipated 3rd full length record, "FROM PILLAR TO POST" in 2009. Look for his videos on MTV's LOGO network as well as ADD-TV in New York and Out Of The Closet Television in Los Angeles. Logan Lynn---DLister of the Week, June 13th, 2007
(INTERVIEW WITH DLIST CO-FOUNDER DANIEL NARDICCIO)
This kid caught my eye when he sent me a song called "Come Home" with lyrics like "Do you suck every cock you come across?" devulging the anguish one feels in a boyfriend who's a cheater.
So, i was pleased as can be to book him for next Weds, the 20th, for our Cornhole County Animal Farm- it's my usual Weds night party at Ottos, but we're actually adding a petting zoo with a live baby goat, hosted by The World Famous BOB- a portion of the proceeds benefit the catskill animal sanctuary.
But before we do any of that, we decided to have a little Q& A from the cyber-sexy Logan Lynn!
Daniel: So, logan, how well known are you in your native Portland?
Logan: I GUESS I'M FAIRLY WELL KNOWN AROUND THESE PARTS AT THIS POINT...PARTICULARLY SINCE MY VIDEO STARTED PLAYING ON MTV'S LOGO NETWORK 5 TIMES A DAY. THE LOCAL PRESS IS ALL OVER MY SHIT RIGHT NOW. IT'S KIND-OF RIDICULOUS, ACTUALLY. WE WENT OUT ON SATURDAY NIGHT TO "THE SILVERADO" (THE GAYEST BAR ON THE GAYEST STREET IN PORTLAND) AND THIS GUY, WHO WAS A FAN, KEPT TAKING MY PICTURE ON HIS CAMERAPHONE AND STARING AND POINTING ME OUT TO PEOPLE. I TEND TO FIND THAT SORT OF STUFF FLATTERING, BUT IT DOES FREAK ME OUT A LITTLE BIT...I'M NOT QUITE USED TO IT YET.
Daniel: How would you descibe yourself?
Logan: I'M JUST YOUR AVERAGE WHINY, DRUG-DAMAGED CRYBABY WHO CAN'T KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT.
Daniel: How do you describe yourself in a Craigslist Ad?
Logan: I HAVEN'T EVER USED CRAIGSLIST EXCEPT TO GET RID OF FURNITURE, SO IT USUALLY GOES SOMETHING LIKE "I'M FREE. COME TAKE ME NOW."
Daniel: You're coming to NYC next week to play at my party at Ottos- is this your first time playing in NYC?
Logan: YES, I COME TO NYC OFTEN, BUT IT'S MY FIRST TIME PLAYING THERE...MY BANDMATE CARLOS CORTES HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE BIG CITY, SO IT'LL BE FUN TO SHOW HIS ASS ALL AROUND.
Daniel: How'd you find out about Dlist?
Logan: I THINK IT WAS A POP-UP AD ON MYSPACE THAT WAS THE ORIGINAL DRAW...I'M A SUCKER FOR A SHIRTLESS POP-UP.
Daniel: What's the first thing you plan on doing when you arrive?
Logan: WE ARE TAKING A RED EYE ON MONDAY NIGHT AND GET THERE AT 8AM (WHICH IS 5AM MY TIME) SO I'M THINKING THAT THE FIRST THING ON MY AGENDA IS TO CAB IT TO OUR APARTMENT, GET MYSELF OUT OF MY CLOTHES AND GO BACK TO SLEEP. THEN, I WAS GOING TO COME FIND YOU AND TAKE YOU TO LUNCH.
Daniel: Which boys from Dlist are you planning on meeting up with while here?
Logan: SO FAR, THE ONLY PLANS I HAVE WITH DLISTERS ARE WITH YOU AND GEORGE LYTER FROM ADD-TV/PILLAWARDS...I LOVE THAT GUY. I PLAN TO PAINT THE TOWN RED WHILE I'M THERE THOUGH, SO BRACE YOURSELVES.
Daniel: Do you have a bf?
Logan: YES, I DO. HE'S GREAT.
Daniel: Will he let you cheat while you are here- you know, the rules of the road?
Logan: UM...THAT'S PROBABLY A QUESTION YOU'D HAVE TO ASK HIM DIRECTLY...I'M GUESSING THAT IT'S EASIER TO ASK FORGIVENESS THAN PERMISSION WITH THAT SORT OF THING, RIGHT? REALLY, I TRY TO KEEP MY PANTS ON AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THESE DAYS.
Daniel: I look forward to meeting you and hearing you!
Logan: WELL, I'M ALSO LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU AND BEING HEARD! THANKS AGAIN FOR BRINGING US OUT...IT'S GONNA BE FUN! SEE YOU IN A WEEK,SIR!
