This is the official DList profile for Seth Bedford and Huxley Vertical Cabaret Nouveau.
Composer, arranger, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and visual artist Seth Bedford blends the musical idioms of Weimar kabarett, American jazz, Tin Pan Alley, French chanson, tango, New Wave and a variety of other musical sources to create a sound that defies categorization. As a performer, he's taken on the music of Eurythmics, Josephine Baker, Tom Waits, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill and William Bolcom among others to blur the lines of where popular music stops and art music begins. As a composer, he's written music for cabaret, theater, film and the symphonic concert hall, and is currently at work on his first full length theater piece, The Seaside Inn: A Vaudeville Opera. He is also the artistic director and vocalist for Huxley Vertical Cabaret Nouveau, an 8-piece acoustic cabaret orchestra performing primarily in New York's Greenwich Village and East Village.
A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and native Texan, Bedford studied cello and composition and now works as a freelance composer and performer as well as a violist and accordionist. He currently resides in New York City with his boyfriend, 18 hats, and 14 musical instruments.
Huxley Vertical Cabaret Nouveau was founded in 2005 in Austin, TX. In 2006, Seth Bedford relocated to NYC and reestablished the ensemble in its current lineup of two violins, viola, bass, piano, trumpet, accordion, and voice, with sometimes mandolin, toy piano, junk percussion and other instruments.
The band has since released its first full-length album, Huxley Vertical Cabaret Nouveau and frequently performs at New York City's Duplex Cabaret Theatre. Musically, Huxley Vertical is a combination of French chanson, Weimar kabarett and American Jazz and vaudeville for a sound uniquely antique and modern at the same time. The band performs acoustically whenever and wherever possible.
The album, along with Seth's album composed for the Austin-based Elastic Wasteband, is available now. See the link for CDBaby.com and Apple iTunes below.
