The Revival House

Each month The Revival House brings you the very best in homo-grown cinema from decades past. Specializing in the rare and obscure we feature Foreign and Hollywood films as well as Independent hits and Underground, Art-Fag flicks by directors such as Derek Jarman, Fred Halsted, Andy Warhol and Bruce LaBruce.

On Wednesday, November 19th The Revival House presents "Poison" (U.S.A., 1991), by Queer Director Todd Haynes.

Breaking ground for a new generation of queer filmmakers, "Poison" was positioned front and center for what is now known as the "New Queer Cinema" movement of the 90's. Comprised of three stories, intercut and shot in widely divergent styles, "Poison" provides us a birds-eye view into three very different realities.

"Horror", filmed as 50's, grade-B horror film, tells of the terrible transformation of man and society when a scientist develops an elixir created from the essence of human sexuality.

Using a documentary style, "Hero", tells the story of a young boy who exacts revenge on his abusive father, freeing his mother and himself, before taking flight from his home.

And finally, "Homo", inspired by the stories of Jean Genet, illustrates a passion which blooms from behind prison walls.

Screening with "Poison" will be the silent, black and white short "Un Chant d'Amour" (France, 1950), the only film by celebrated author Jean Genet. Banned for decades in Europe and the U.S. for it's erotic and explicit presentation of gay male sexuality, this film is a remarkable and fully realized portrait of passion and longing between men.

The Revival House is located in the Mission District at A.T.A. (Artists Television Access), 992 Valencia Street (@ 21st). We present classic, queer cinema on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Doors open at 7:00, screening begins at 8:00. Admission is $6.00.
