Was it only last winter when I opened the cabinet

and found that half-eaten bag of confectioners'

sugar and the confetti of droppings

that moved me like a child's

finger-painting that says "YOU"?

It forced me to reconsider the universal truth-

that a mouse is a creature, whose big ecstasy

is coming across a seed or two-

but that's only the hunter-gatherers.

Give a mouse the run of your house

and it will beat a path to your bag of sugar

and gorge itself with a happiness that could

move you to tears, which is what I

gave it, right there-with my fingers

in the mess it had left me.

But today, coming across the pound cake on the counter,

with a quarter of it missing, and the orgy of droppings

on the birthday napkins on the Lazy Susan,

I damned it and promised it its death.

And now I'm left with what I've lost

the simple capacity to be stirred

by simple things-like unabashed greed

and discriminating appetite,

which led it, human-like, to bypass

the bowl of apples and the sacks of navy beans.

No, the difference isn't between mere

sugar and consummate cake-I didn't

make the thing myself, I've got no personal

stake in the seconds of someone's life

that got nibbled off with it.

This has more to do with the way you're

not designed to moisten up

at the end of a movie you've already seen-

Maybe sympathy comes best

when it's got some element of surprise to it-

like when you stop on 14th Street and

reach for your wallet the first time the Gypsy child

grabs your arm and tells you she's hungry.

But the next time-though she's probably

just as hungry-which may be considerably

or not at all, you push her arm away.

And the next time, you push her harder

and call her an ugly name.
