Viva la Argentina!
BUENOS AIRES - Argentina on Thursday became the first South American nation to legalize marriage equality, granting same-sex couples all the legal rights, responsibilities, and protections that marriage brings to heterosexuals.
Supporters of same-sex marriage celebrated the law's passage in Buenos Aires early Thursday.
The 33-27 Senate vote was tallied shortly before dawn, after a marathon debate that touched on religion, ethics, the legacy of Argentina's dictatorship, and the challenges of raising children. There were three abstentions.
Since the lower house already approved it, the law takes effect within days.
'From today onward, Argentina is a more just and democratic country,' said Maria Rachid, president of the Argentine Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender federation.
The law 'not only recognizes the rights of our families, but also the possibility of having access to health care, to leave a pension, to leave our assets to the people with whom we have shared many years of life, including our children.'
Passage of the law, a priority for the government of President Cristina Fernandez, has inspired activists to push for similar laws in other countries.
But passage also carries political risks for Fernandez and her husband, former President Nestor Kirchner.
The vote divided their governing coalition, and while gay rights have strong support in the capital, anti-gay feelings still run strong in much of Argentine society, where the vast majority of people are Roman Catholic.
The approval came despite a concerted campaign by the Roman Catholic Church and evangelical Christian groups, which drew 60,000 people to march on Congress and urged parents in churches and schools to work against passage.
Elsewhere in Latin America, same-sex civil unions have been legalized in Uruguay and some states in Mexico and Brazil.
Argentina is now only the world's tenth country to legalize marriage equality having followed the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, and Iceland.

Vienna Lays Out the Red Carpet:
Leading figures from royalty, politics, culture, and sport were all present at the UEFA EURO 2008 final between Germany and Spain, emphasising the huge global appeal of the Vienna showpiece.
Extraordinary Guest List: Heading the list of VIPs at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion were Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero, along with their German counterparts, president Horst Kohler and chancellor Angela Merkel. 'It is a special day and the list of honorary guests is extraordinary,' said Austrian Football Association president Friedrich Stickler.
Politics and Music: Other prominent visitors included Austrian president Heinz Fischer, Austrian chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, and Swiss federal councillor Samuel Schmid. 'The EURO was and is a festival of European integration. Switzerland and Austria were charming and successful hosts,' said Gusenbauer. Present from the music world, meanwhile, were Placido Domingo and the artists behind the official UEFA EURO 2008 songs, Shaggy and Enrique Iglesias, the latter performing 'Can You Hear Me?' shortly before the teams took the field.
Celebrity Count: The celebrity count also included Hollywood actor Harrison Ford, former United States defence secretary Henry Kissinger, multiple Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, and FIFA President Joseph S Blatter. Two former German winning captains of the EURO, Jurgen Klinsmann and Franz Beckenbauer, were also in the stands at the Ernst-Happel Stadion, and Beckenbauer gave his verdict on this month's event when he said: 'It has been a great tournament. Football has won many new friends. And the hosts were always open-hearted.'

'Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Caroline.
My fellow Democrats, my fellow Americans, it is so wonderful to be here.
And nothing -- nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight.
I have come here tonight to stand with you to change America, to restore its future, to rise to our best ideals, and to elect Barack Obama president of the United States.
As I look ahead, I am strengthened by family and friendship. So many of you have been with me in the happiest days and the hardest days. Together we have known success and seen setbacks, victory and defeat.
But we have never lost our belief that we are all called to a better country and a newer world. And I pledge to you -- I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate when we begin the great test.
Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you.
For me this is a season of hope -- new hope for a justice and fair prosperity for the many, and not just for the few -- new hope.
And this is the cause of my life -- new hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American -- north, south, east, west, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.
We can meet these challenges with Barack Obama. Yes, we can, and finally, yes, we will.
Barack Obama will close the book on the old politics of race and gender and group against group and straight against gay.
And Barack Obama will be a commander-in-chief who understands that young Americans in uniform must never be committed to a mistake, but always for a mission worthy of their bravery.
We are told that Barack Obama believes too much in an America of high principle and bold endeavor, but when John Kennedy called of going to the moon, he didn't say it's too far to get there. We shouldn't even try.
Our people answered his call and rose to the challenge, and today an American flag still marks the surface of the moon.
Yes, we are all Americans. This is what we do. We reach the moon. We scale the heights. I know it. I've seen it. I've lived it. And we can do it again.
There is a new wave of change all around us, and if we set our compass true, we will reach our destination -- not merely victory for our Party, but renewal for our nation.
And this November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama and for you and for me, our country will be committed to his cause. The work begins anew. The hope rises again. And the dream lives on'.

01 May: International Workers Day is May Day
Rockefeller Center - 1932
01 May: a day commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labor movement, is observed in many countries on May 1. In the United States and Canada it is celebrated on the first Monday of September as Labor Day. In 1889 an international federation of socialist groups and trade unions declared the date of May 1 as Workers Day to commemorate the Haymarket Riot in Chicago [1886]. Later that year, in the United States, President Grover Cleveland renamed the holiday Labor Day and changed the date to the first Monday of September because he thought the original date commemorated socialism; Canada followed suit not long afterward. In the Soviet Union, leaders embraced the new holiday, believing it would encourage workers in Europe and the United States to unite against capitalism. The day became a significant holiday in the Soviet Union and in the Eastern-bloc countries, with high-profile parades celebrating the worker and showcasing Soviet military might. In Europe May 1 was historically associated with rural May Day festivals, but the original meaning of the day was gradually replaced by the modern association with the labor movement. In Germany Labour Day became an official holiday in 1933 after the rise of the Nazi party. Ironically, Germany abolished free unions the day after establishing the holiday, virtually destroying the German labor movement. In many countries, Workers Day is still observed with parades, although this practice has become less popular. The holiday is also celebrated with picnics and parties, and it is often a day for demonstrations and rallies in support of workers across the world.

Israel Bombs Gaza After Vowing 'Harsh' and 'Disproportionate' Response
02 February 2009 [Bloomberg] -- Israel bombed areas of the Gaza Strip after vowing a 'harsh' and 'disproportionate' response to Palestinians who fired at least nine rockets and mortars into southern Israel yesterday.
The raids targeted six suspected weapons-smuggling tunnels and an outpost of the Hamas group, the Israel Defense Forces said in an e-mailed statement early today. Missiles struck an unmanned police station in central Gaza, according to Palestinian witnesses.
Israel's response to rocket attacks 'will be harsh, and it will be disproportionate,' Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said at the start of a weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday, in comments broadcast on Army Radio.
Israel on Jan. 18 ended a 22-day military offensive in the Gaza Strip aimed at stopping Hamas firing rockets into Israeli territory. Violence has increased since Jan. 27 with an Israeli soldier and two Palestinians killed.
The Israeli air raids late yesterday targeted tunnels near the border with Egypt suspected to be used by Hamas to smuggle weapons into Gaza, residents of the southern town of Rafah said. There were no reports of injuries.
'As the sole authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas bears full responsibility for all terrorism originating within its area of control,' the IDF said in its statement.
Israel is holding a general election on Feb. 10 to replace the departing Olmert. Polls show Benjamin Netanyahu's opposition Likud party leading over Defense Minister Ehud Barak's Labor and the ruling Kadima party of Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
In a poll by Teleseker published in Maariv on Jan. 30, Likud got backing for 28 seats in the 120-member Knesset, compared with 23 for Livni's Kadima Party.
Barak said yesterday that 'we will all of us have to weigh our actions carefully' in responding to rocket attacks, according to an e-mail from his office.
'We are certainly in an election season, and we are seeing the barbaric side of some people, some of whom have never held a weapon in their hands or have had to take tough decisions.'
At least 1,375 Palestinians were killed in the recent conflict, according to the Palestinian emergency services department in Gaza. Thirteen Israelis died, according to the police, as more than 800 rockets were fired into Israel.

Monday, 19 January 2009 - At least 1,300 slaughtered by Israel in its 3-week offensive against the occupied Palestinians of Gaza; 13 Israelis die
A Palestinian man Monday prays in the rubble of his home, destroyed during Israel's offensive in Gaza.
[CNN] -- More than 1,300 Palestinians died and about 5,400 others were wounded during Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza, the Web site of the Palestinian Authority's Central Bureau of Statistics said Monday.
Louay Shabana, head of the agency, said more than 22,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Shabana put the economic destruction at more than $1.9 billion.
The fighting largely stopped Sunday with a cease-fire. Israel has said 13 of its citizens -- including 10 soldiers -- were killed during the offensive, which started December 27.
Israel said its offensive was aimed at stopping Hamas militants from firing rockets into southern Israel.
Gaza is in need of humanitarian, economic, sanitary and social help as a result of the Israeli attacks, Shabana said.
The attacks destroyed public sector and private buildings in Gaza, affecting even the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's facilities and halting economic and social services, the statistics agency said.
Gaza's gross domestic product was slashed by 85 percent during the 22 days of war, and it could take a year for the economy to recover, the agency said in a preliminary report.
About 80 percent of crops in Gaza were destroyed, according to the agency.
'The pervasive sense here among the population is one of overwhelming grief, so many families have been destroyed in so many ways,' said John Ging, the top United Nations official in Gaza.
Ging, UNRWA's Gaza director of operations, said the bill could reach 'billions of dollars.'
Among the dead were 159 children, two of whom died in an UNRWA school that was shelled Saturday, Ging said.
Gaza's main border crossings, which Israel often closed in response to Hamas rocket attacks, were open Monday.
Infrastructure repairs were being made, but 400,000 people still had no water, according to Ging.
Streets in some northern Gaza towns were flooded with sewage, and about 50 UN facilities were damaged, he said.
More than 170 supply trucks crossed into Gaza on Monday, less than a third of the daily number that crossed in 2005, said John Holmes, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator.
Israel tried to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza, a senior Israel Defense Forces officer said in a posting Monday on the IDF Web site.
'This was not a war against the Palestinians,' he said. 'It was an operation of self-defense against Hamas and related terror organizations.
Unfortunately, this task was made extremely difficult by Hamas, as they made the choice to use civilians as human shields.'
Israel began the offensive in response to rocket fire by Hamas militants after showing eight years of restraint, the officer said.
The operation's goal, he said, 'was to improve the security situation in southern Israel, and to facilitate peaceful living for the Israeli civilians living there.'
'We asked ourselves how to accomplish this, and the answer was to hit Hamas hard -- to strike the tunnels, the terrorists themselves, and all of their assets -- in order to prevent them from committing war crimes by firing rockets that target our civilian population,' the officer said.
He said seven rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel since Sunday's cease-fire declaration.
'We want to give this cease-fire a chance, but if Hamas chooses not to, we will utilize all of our means,' he said.

Israeli Forces Shell United Nations Headquarters in Gaza - Thursday, 15 January 2009
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip [Associated Press] - Israel shelled the United Nations headquarters in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, engulfing the compound and a warehouse in fire and destroying thousands of pounds of food and humanitarian supplies intended for Palestinian refugees.
UN workers and Palestinian firefighters, some wearing bulletproof jackets, struggled to douse the flames and pull bags of food from the debris after the Israeli attack, which was another blow to efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Dense smoke billowed from the compound.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is in the region to end the devastating offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers, demanded a 'full explanation' and said the Israeli defense minister told him there had been a 'grave mistake.'
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the military fired artillery shells at the UN compound after Hamas militants opened fire from the location. Three people were wounded. 'It is absolutely true that we were attacked from that place, but the consequences are very sad and we apologize for it,' he said. 'I don't think it should have happened and I'm very sorry.'
A senior Israeli military officer had also said Israeli troops shelled the compound after coming under fire from Palestinian militants there - an account dismissed by a UN official there at the time as 'nonsense.'
Even as a top Israeli envoy went to Egypt to discuss a cease-fire proposal, the military pushed farther into Gaza in an apparent effort to step up pressure on Hamas.
Ground forces thrust deep into a crowded neighborhood for the first time, sending terrified residents fleeing for cover.
Shells also struck a hospital, five high-rise apartment buildings and a building housing media outlets in Gaza City, injuring several journalists.
Bullets also entered another building housing The Associated Press offices, entering a room where two staffers were working but wounding no one. The Foreign Press Association, representing journalists covering Israel and the Palestinian territories, demanded a halt to attacks on press buildings.
The army had collected the locations of media organizations at the outset of fighting to avoid such attacks.
Olmert's office said US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned him on Thursday, and he told her Israel hoped Egyptian mediators could help bring about a cease-fire and an end to weapons smuggling. The statement said Rice, who leaves office on January 20, said the US was willing to help resolve the smuggling issue.
Israel launched its war on December 27 in an effort to stop militant rocket fire from Gaza that has terrorized hundreds of thousands of Israelis.
** Some 1,100 Palestinians have been killed, roughly half of them civilians, according to UN and Palestinian medical officials. Gaza health official Dr Moaiya Hassanain said at least 70 people were killed or died of wounds throughout Gaza on Thursday.
** Thirteen Israelis also have been killed since the campaign began.
Israel says it will press ahead until Hamas halts the rocket fire and stops smuggling weapons into Gaza from neighboring Egypt.
Israeli police said 20 rockets hit southern Israel on Thursday, injuring 10 people. Five of the wounded were in a car that was struck in the city of Beersheba.
Officials from the Israeli military and Shin Bet security agency said Said Siam, the Hamas interior minister who controlled the militant group's feared security forces, was killed while hiding in his brother's home in Gaza City. Siam is considered to be among Hamas' top five leaders in Gaza.
The Israeli officials spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement by the military.
Palestinian medical officials confirmed the house was attacked, but there was no word from Hamas on Siam's fate.
The UN compound struck Thursday houses the UN Works and Relief Agency, which distributes food aid to hundreds of thousands of destitute Gazans in the tiny seaside [ Israeli occupied ] territory of 1.4 million people.
'I conveyed my strong protest and outrage to the defense minister and foreign minister and demanded a full explanation,' said Ban, who arrived in Israel on Thursday morning from Egypt.
It had only that morning become a makeshift shelter for 700 Gaza City residents seeking sanctuary from relentless Israeli shelling, UN officials in Gaza said.
John Ging, director of UNRWA operations in Gaza, said the attack at the compound caused a 'massive explosion' that wounded three people.
A senior Israeli military officer said troops opened fire after militants inside the compound shot anti-tank weapons and machine guns. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal army announcement later in the day.
Ging, who was in the compound at the time, dismissed the Israeli account as 'nonsense.'
Israeli shells first hit the courtyard filled with refugees, then struck garages and the UN's main warehouse, sending thousands of tons of food aid up in flames, Ging said. Later, fuel supplies went up in flames, sending a thick black plume of smoke into the air.
'It's a total disaster for us,' Ging said, adding that the UN had warned the Israeli military that the compound was in peril from shelling that had begun overnight.
UN officials say they have provided Israel with GPS coordinates of all UN installations in Gaza to prevent such attacks.
The refugees were moved to a school away from the immediate fighting, he said.
Separately, Israel shells landed next to a UN school in another Gaza City neighborhood, wounding 14 people who had sought sanctuary there, medics and firefighters said.
An Israeli attack near a UN school in northern Gaza earlier this month killed nearly 40 people. At the time, Israel said militants had fired on army positions from the beginning.

Los Angeles - Protest Against Israeli Government
Protests flare up around the world - including in New York and Los Angeles, where over 5,000 demonstrated - against the hateful Israeli government as it ramps up its oppressive and violent offensive against the Palestinian people - 02 January 2009
Zionism Is Racism
Yet again, Israel proves it is a violent, terrorist state, that cares only for Israeli life...
Two years ago it was Lebanese lives they slaughtered, now Israel says it is in an 'all-out war' with Palestinians in occupied Gaza ...
As of Monday, 29 December 2008, nearly 400 Palestinians have been killed and another 1400-plus wounded as a result of Israeli aggression...
At the same moment, 5 Israelis have been killed ... 5 versus 400...
You do the math, look at the 2006 Lebanon offensive [ 'Operation Just Reward' ], then talk about Israel's unquestioned right to 'defend' itself...
Defend...? Ok, I'm good with that - but NOT via genocide...
And where is the United States as these crimes against humanity move thru its 4th day...?
The US is sitting on it's arrogant, Israel-can-do-no-wrong, ass watching the massacre from afar...
And we wonder why the rest of the world hates us...? Why Islamic extremist target the US...??? Wake the fuck up people...!!!
It's time to knock Israel upside the head and tell them they want to pull this fucking bullshit over and over and over, then they're on their own...
Strong enough to assault Lebanon in 2006, strong enough for the current Palensinian offensive, then strong enough to stand on their own...
Make Calls: Your Senators; Your Congressman; The White House; The President-Elect; The Vice President-Elect; Write An OpEd; Post A Blog...
GET INVOLVED IN BITCH-SLAPPING ISRAEL FOR ITS ARROGANT AND OFFENSIVE AGGRESSION AGAINST PEOPLE WHO ARE UNABLE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES PROPERLY AND ARE LIVING UNDER OCCUPATION AND OPPRESSION...!
Do It NOW or blood from every murdered Palestinian stains your hands as it does George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Ehud Olmert, & Ehud Barak...
' ...The White House on Monday called on Hamas to halt rocket fire against Israel, so calm can be restored in Gaza...'
Are you fucking serious...????? The call goes out to the occupied Palestinians to stop...? But not to the Israelis...??? Fuck that shit...!
'While recognizing Israel's right to defend itself, I have also condemned the * excessive use of force by Israel * in Gaza' -UN Secretary-General
This offensive by Israel against the occupied Palestinian people is the worst since its 1967 preemptive attacks launching the Arab-Israeli War...

Every Californian should continue to have the choice to marry the person they love.
It's a personal and fundamental freedom and it's guaranteed by the California Constitution.
But this November, Californians will vote on Prop. 8, a divisive measure that aims to take away this basic freedom from same-gender couples.
It's not right for California.
And it's not right for you.
...
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Thursday, 15 May 2008
* Gay and Lesbian Couples Win Freedom to Marry in California *
California Supreme Court Issues Historic Ruling
SACRAMENTO -- The California Supreme Court ruled today that the state can no longer exclude same-sex couples from civil marriage.
In a 4-3 decision, drafted by Chief Justice Ronald George, the court ruled: 'In light of the fundamental nature of the substantive rights embodied in the right to marry - and their central importance to an individual's opportunity to live a happy, meaningful, and satisfying life as a full member of society - the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all individuals and couples, without regard to their sexual orientation.'
The court also noted: 'Furthermore, in contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual's sexual orientation - like a person's race or gender - does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights. We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.'
'This is a historic and landmark day for those who value fairness and opportunity,' said Shannon Price Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, who argued the case on behalf of 14 same-sex couples and two organizations, Equality California and Our Family Coalition. 'The court's decision today upheld the highest ideals of equality that are embodied in the California Constitution.'
'There is no more important and deeply personal decision than whether to take on the commitment of marriage,' he added. 'With today's ruling, the California Supreme Court declared that lesbians and gay men have an equal right to make that cherished commitment.'
'We have waited more than 50 years for the opportunity to marry,' said Phyllis Lyon, on behalf of herself and Del Martin, who are plaintiffs in the case. Lyon, 83, and Martin, 87, have been together 56 years. 'We are thrilled that this day has finally come.'
Lawsuits challenging the marriage ban were filed in March, 2004. Along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the couples are represented by Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, Heller Ehrman LLP and the Law Office of David C. Codell. The City and County of San Francisco likewise filed its own challenge to the marriage laws, represented by the office of City Attorney Dennis Herrera. The cases, along with four others, were consolidated into one appeal, In re Marriage Cases.
The court ruled that lesbian and gay couples are entitled to the same fundamental right to marry as heterosexual couples as protected by the California constitution. The decision explicitly strikes down Proposition 22, a voter-passed initiative that passed in 2000 that sought to limit marriage to only between a man and woman. Under California rules of procedure, the decision can not go into effect for at least 30 days.
'We're tremendously gratified that the Court today has fulfilled its traditional duty,' said Jennifer Pizer, Senior Counsel for Lambda Legal. 'Like the 1948 decision recognizing the right of interracial couples to marry, this ruling keeps a promise that every Californian should hold dear - the California Constitution embraces everyone equally. Each of us depends on the Supreme Court to enforce our basic rights to be free and equal under law - no more and no less than our neighbors and friends. Enforcement was essential for mixed-race families in the 1940s and for women in the 1970s, and it's essential for gay men and lesbians now. California's Constitution safeguards all of us.'
'All Californians should be incredibly proud of our state for leading the nation in ending the unnecessary pain that is caused when lesbian and gay couples are barred from the legal protections and dignity that come through marriage,' said Maya Harris, Executive Director of the ACLU of Northern California. 'Today marks a defining moment in our state's already rich history of establishing fairness for all.'
Currently, lesbian and gay couples may legally marry in Massachusetts, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and South Africa. In 2007, an Iowa trial court held that Iowa's marriage ban violates the Iowa Constitution. That case is now before the Iowa Supreme Court. A lawsuit challenging the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage in Connecticut is also pending before the Connecticut Supreme Court.
* In anticipation of today's ruling, right-wing organizations are attempting to amend the California Constitution to openly discriminate against lesbian and gay couples. Groups funded by out-of-state organizations have submitted signatures to place an initiative on the November ballot that would ask voters to alter the constitution by denying gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry, which the court upheld today. The California secretary of state has not yet determined if the discriminatory initiative has qualified for the November ballot. *
* 'The California Constitution was written to protect the freedoms and equality of all people, creating a place where every person can realize his or her hopes and dreams,' said Equality California Executive Director Geoff Kors. 'That is the California we choose to live in - a state that ensures dignity and respect for its diverse communities and families. We are confident that Californians will respect the court's ruling for fairness and opportunity and affirm that lesbian and gay Californians deserve full equality under the law.' *
In an interview on April 11, Gov. Schwarzenegger stated that an initiative to amend the California Constitution to ban gay and lesbian couples from marriage was 'a waste of time,' adding 'I will always be there to fight against that. It will never happen.'
Kors added, 'I truly believe that Californians are ready to move past the type of politics that seeks to divide us by our differences. Most Californians work hard to treat others fairly, and they believe their neighbors should have the same opportunity to realize their hopes and dreams.'
The case is among the most heavily briefed cases in the history of the California Supreme Court. More than 20 counties and municipalities filed a friend-of-the court brief in support of marriage for same-sex couples, including the most populous cities in California: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Long Beach, Sacramento and Oakland.
In addition, more than 250 religious and civil rights leaders and organizations, including the California NAACP, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, California Council of Churches, Asian Pacific American Legal Center and National Black Justice Coalition, filed briefs supporting same-sex couples seeking the right to marry. Numerous legal and bar associations, including the Los Angeles County Bar Association, also registered their support, as well as many of the state's leading constitutional law scholars and family law professors.

04 November 2008 - California's Ballot Proposition 8 passes by a small margin, changing the language of the constitution of the state to define recognized marriage as between one man and one woman, thereby stripping away the constitutional rights of millions of Californians and segregating them from the rest of the population... Briefs have been filed claiming the move is illegal and Prop 8 should be invalidated... The California Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case in the spring of 2009...

*** Quoted from Israel's Winograd Commission Report on the 2006 Israeli Offensive Against the People of Lebanon - 01 May 2007
' The bottom line is this: Peace will come to Israel and the Middle East only when the Israeli government is willing to comply with international law, with the Roadmap for Peace, with official American policy, with the wishes of a majority of its own citizens -- and honor its own previous commitments -- by accepting its legal borders. All Arab neighbors must pledge to honor Israel's right to live in peace under these conditions.
The United States is squandering international prestige and goodwill and intensifying global anti-American terrorism by unofficially condoning or abetting the Israeli confiscation and colonization of Palestinian territories.
It will be a tragedy -- for the Israelis, the Palestinians, and the world -- if peace is rejected and a system of oppression, apartheid, and sustained violence is permitted to prevail. '

07 November 2007 - Los Angeles City Council Calls for Repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
LOS ANGELES - In unanimous vote, the Los Angeles City Council passed a resolution on November 7th calling on Congress to repeal the federal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on lesbian, gay, and bisexual service members. The resolution, which calls for passage of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a Congressional bill to repeal the law, was introduced by City Council member Bill Rosendahl.
"Communities across America are demanding that Congress place military readiness ahead of discrimination," said Former Marine Captain Tom Carpenter, board member for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." "SLDN salutes the Los Angeles City Council and Councilman Bill Rosendahl for their tireless efforts in building grassroots momentum for repeal. This vote, on the eve of the Veterans Day weekend, is a reminder to us all that we must treat all service members with honor and that by keeping the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' law in place, we deny our lesbian, gay, and bisexual personnel the dignity and respect they have earned."
The Los Angeles City Council joins city councils in Atlanta, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, St Louis, Tucson, West Hollywood CA, and Cathedral City CA, in calling for repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." The California State Legislature also recently approved a resolution calling for an end to the ban.
"'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is an unreasonable and unnecessary law that compromises our national security interests," said Former Marine Corps Captain Julianne Sohn, a veteran of the Iraq War and current Los Angeles Police Department officer. "We want to thank Council member Bill Rosendahl for his leadership on this issue and are proud of the City Council for adding their voices to the growing demand to end this discriminatory policy."
The resolution will be sent to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for his signature.

' for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change,
and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change '
Albert Arnold [ Al ] Gore Jr,
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [ IPCC ],
awarded jointly
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 is to be shared, in two equal parts, between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.
Indications of changes in the earth's future climate must be treated with the utmost seriousness, and with the precautionary principle uppermost in our minds. Extensive climate changes may alter and threaten the living conditions of much of mankind. They may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states.
Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the IPCC has created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming. Thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries have collaborated to achieve greater certainty as to the scale of the warming. Whereas in the 1980s global warming seemed to be merely an interesting hypothesis, the 1990s produced firmer evidence in its support. In the last few years, the connections have become even clearer and the consequences still more apparent.
Al Gore has for a long time been one of the world's leading environmentalist politicians. He became aware at an early stage of the climatic challenges the world is facing. His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted.
By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC and Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world's future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of mankind. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond man's control.

' We, the undersigned, In recognition of the five million people who signed the 'Moratorium 2000' petition launched by the Community of Sant'Egidio and Amnesty International renew the call for a worldwide moratorium on executions and an end to capital punishment in the belief that the death penalty:
- Violates the universally affirmed right to life;
- Constitutes the ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment;
- Constantly risks the irreversible error of the execution of an innocent person;
- Provides no added value to the deterrence of crime;
- Brutalises those societies that employ state sanctioned judicial killing.
We welcome the strong progress already made towards a global end to capital punishment and acknowledge that 130 nations have abolished the death penalty in law or practice. We invite all governments to work for a world free of executions as a contribution to the enhancement of human dignity and the progressive development of human rights. We call upon the member states of the UN General Assembly to overwhelmingly vote in favour of an international moratorium on executions. '

Yeah, Bush was terrible, but Obama has been maintaining the status quo, not only that he's doubled drone attacks in Afganistan, deported far more people the Bush ever did, fucked over health care ( I don;t think he really believed everyone should have it) and really did nothing about regulation of the oil industry.
