I moved to NYC on May 1. I start an Illustration MFA program at SVA in early September. Just like everyone else who moves to the Big Apple, I'm looking for my big break. I'm a freelance illustrator, and music enthusiast (I sing, and love going to hear concerts and to see opera). My extended family is from NC, and we have deep roots there. I appreciate the finer things in life.
I have a thing for handsome men with large narrow noses and dramatic silhouettes. Nice arms don't hurt either, and don't forget your intellect. I like manly men who clean up nice and know when it's okay to put their feet up on the furniture. If you know any, send them my way.
for class. but i kind of like it :) the assignment was "fall," any meaning we wanted. I chose the season (obvi). We had to use found reference, so i chose to do fabrics that make me think of fall. there's a wool tweed in the 'leaves' and cable knit for the bkd, along with my cotton scarf in the trees as bark.
Enlighten! One Night of Light - Artist Lamp Show Benefiting Inner-City Arts (10/13/09) [View | Hide]
I was invited to be in a benefit auction out in Culver City a few months back and the work is due soon. The show/sale will be in November, to benefit arts education in public schools. I'm pretty excited to get to do it, there are a lot of prominent illustrators and interesting artists participating. It's a cool opportunity.
We have to design a lampshide, on a template (easy enough). I decided to do my rorschach girls doing the can can. I like that they feel very seventies and modish/swinger-y.
time for another installment of SKETCHES! these are scanned straight out of my sketchbook, with minimal cropping, and editing (only to get that page to the white, and that ink to the black, folks!)
My mystery piece is complete! there is now a lurker. I must have Gorey on the mind, as this is decidedly an homage to him... I have more things to scan and post but they'll have to wait. I'm off to see some museums.
I tried to add some blood detail, but it really didn't fit with the piece. It seemed too violent. I'm thinking of maybe adding a man lurking in the shadows to the right of the mantle piece.
Also, the original drawing of the room.
New Pattern from Murder Mystery illustration (8/6/09) [View | Hide]
I know the file says "death pattern" but really it's just macabre. Horseflies and skulls, with baroque filigree! Save it as your desktop, you have my permission. Just write me a little note to say thank you, so I can thank you back!
Well Marshall said to work on some more drawings and show him again. He said something along the lines of me being talented and my work had good drawing in it but the long necks on all my figures were a turn-off. He used the word "caricatures." I get the impression that the program felt my work is too formulaic. Anyway, I said I knew you got in and he said "You must just hate him" and I said "Yes, I do!" Hah!
